At Austin Gun Club I have always found it a challenge finding the best platform to manage our memberships and activities. I started trying different systems long ago, 2011 in fact, and through the years have used three different platforms. While all these platforms have their good points, none of them achieved my end goal of what I wanted to accomplish without breaking the bank, ease of use, and data control. I decided to part ways with the last thrid party system after a price increase which was too much for me to think of spending on a system that didn’t do absolutely everything I needed it to do and in the way I needed it to. So, I started a journey of creating my own system that would meet the needs of our club, members, etc. It has been a process but it has been worth it trying different ways to make my goals for my club happen.
Another downside of using third party platforms is that the information is only accessible through their system, which point blank meant they own the data. For me that was not ideal. In fact, it took me 9 months to pull all the data from the last third party provider so I would not loose any member/guest/event data. We have data dating back to 2005 when we opened the doors to members and I certainly din’t want to loose all that historical data of the club. I have had some ups and downs but am excited about where our website capabilities are heading with club autonomy, meaning all data is secured and on the club’s platform and not a 3rd party platform.
You may be asking, what all does this mean and why…well, I have other clubs asking what I do as I have asked other clubs what they are doing…and I wanted to be able to share with other gun clubs and hunting preserves how we manage our website, membership, and activities. Is it perfect, no, but a work in progress that keeps improving and I feel it is at a point where I can share with others. While there will be a fee for services, it is my goal to help other clubs achieve their goal in creating the best system for their club while keeping their data in house and secure.
